If you love property, enjoy working with people and want a career where performance can directly increase your earnings, estate agency can offer a fast-moving route into the property industry.

Turn an interest in property into a professional career

Why Become an Estate Agent?

Estate agency is a people business built around property. You can spend your day meeting homeowners, showing buyers around properties, negotiating offers and helping sales move from the first valuation through to completion.

For ambitious people, one of the biggest attractions is that progression and earnings can be closely linked to performance. Build your local knowledge, sales ability and reputation and you can move into Valuer, Branch Manager, Senior Manager or even run your own property business.

Performance-Based EarningsMany estate agency roles combine salary with commission, giving successful agents the opportunity to increase earnings.
Varied Working DaysMix office work with valuations, viewings, negotiations and meeting people throughout your local property market.
Fast ProgressionStrong performers can progress from sales roles into valuations, branch management and senior property positions.

What You’ll Do

Your day can move quickly and every property, seller and buyer is different. Depending on the agency, you may:

  • Speak with homeowners and arrange property valuations.
  • Market properties and write attractive property details.
  • Arrange and conduct viewings with prospective buyers.
  • Negotiate offers between buyers and sellers.
  • Keep clients updated as a sale progresses.
  • Build knowledge of your local market, prices and competing properties.

It is a role where communication, organisation and confidence can quickly translate into results — and where every completed sale gives you a visible sense of achievement.

Skills That Can Help You Succeed

You do not need to be a property expert on day one. What matters is having the right attitude, learning the market and developing the people and sales skills that make clients want to work with you.

  • Confident communication and relationship-building.
  • Negotiation and sales ability.
  • Organisation and strong follow-up.
  • Customer service and professionalism.
  • Commercial awareness and local market interest.
  • Resilience, motivation and a results-focused mindset.

Qualifications & Training

There is no single degree route required to begin a career in estate agency, but recognised property training can make your CV stronger and help demonstrate that you understand the professional side of residential property sales.

A relevant Career Wiz route: the Estate Agency & Property Sales Certificate includes the Propertymark Level 2 Award in Introduction to Sale of Residential Property, helping you build industry knowledge before approaching employers.

Combined with strong communication, local market knowledge and practical sales experience, professional training can help you stand out when applying for your first property role.

Salary & Career Progression

Estate agency earnings often combine a basic salary with commission or on-target earnings (OTE), so performance can make a significant difference. Current trainee vacancies commonly advertise around £25,000–£30,000 OTE, while experienced roles can move substantially higher.
